Milo - Boston Terrier, 10

“We had just lost [our dog] Cody, and I saw a newspaper ad for a litter of Boston Terrier puppies on the south side of Springfield. That was in June of 2011. I had a Boston Terrier when I was a kid, and he was a really good little dog. The dog I had loved playing catch, and I thought this Boston would be good [for my kids] because he’d play fetch with them.

Well, he was a cranky old man from the beginning. He basically just wanted to sit in the chair and be held. He got attached to me pretty quickly and really stayed like that since, so he didn’t quite become the dog I’d imagined for [my kids].

We were on a camping trip once - and I don’t know if this is a favorite memory but I can laugh about it now - and he was sitting next to me in my chair. This guy trots by on a horse, and I don’t think Milo had ever seen a horse before, and he just bolted. He broke his collar and chased after the horse. The horse was spooked, of course, but thankfully nothing bad happened. He just thought he could take on an animal that much bigger than him.

He just wants to be by his person. As he’s gotten older and doesn’t feel so good, he spends more time on his own not sitting with me. I’ll miss his presence the most. It’ll be hard when I don’t have him next to me. I can tell he just really likes me. He follows me and listens. When I say come, he comes. When I go get the mail and say stay, he stays. He’s just been a really good dog. He really is just a grumpy old man, you’d expect him to have a Worther’s candy in his pocket. He’s set in his ways and likes routine, and he’s got his own rhythm of life.”
